Police memorial ceremony at noon today

Annual ceremony honors memory of fallen officers

Corsicana — Police Memorial Service

When: Noon, Friday, May 10

Where: Courthouse lawn

Why: In observance of National Police Week

Guest: Lt. Justin Lewis, Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office

Law enforcement officers in Navarro County who made the ultimate sacrifice protecting life and property will be honored in a noon ceremony Friday at the Navarro County Courthouse.

The week of May 12 through May 18 is National Police Week, and observances locally and nationwide will pay tribute to law enforcement officers killed in line of duty.

Twelve local lawmen are on the list of those to be remembered in the Friday ceremony, taking place at the Police Memorial on the northeast corner of the courthouse grounds.

Guest speaker for the event is Lt. Justin Lewis of the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office. Lewis previously worked for the Navarro County Sheriff’s Office, and served nearly a year as an investigator in the Kaufman County District Attorney’s Office.

He was a familiar face recently as spokesman for the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office during the investigation and subsequent arrests in the killings of Kaufman County DA Mike McLelland, Cynthia McLelland, and assistant DA Mike Hasse. Lewis served as Hasse’s investigator during his time with the DA’s office, and his comments Friday will touch on the loss he felt having to work through the investigation into Hasse’s death.

Prior to his career in law enforcement, Lewis was a journalist, and worked as a reporter for the Corsicana Daily Sun.

Corsicana Police Chief Randy Bratton will serve as master of ceremonies for the event. Navarro County Sheriff Elmer Tanner will introduce Lewis, and will read the honor roll of fallen Navarro County officers. Taylor Parks and Dillon Lankford will provide musical elements during the ceremony. The Rev. B.F. Risinger Jr. and the Rev. Danny Reeves of First Baptist Church will offer prayers, and “Taps” will be performed by Les Grayson.

The Navarro County Sheriff’s Office Color Guard will present the colors during the ceremony, and an honor guard comprised of officers from the Corsicana Police, Navarro County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Department of Public Safety, Navarro College Police and Corsicana Independent School District Police will fire a 21-gun salute in tribute.

The public is encouraged to attend the event, slated for noon Friday. In the event of bad weather, the event will take place in basement conference room of the courthouse.
