CISD bond fails; planning another try in November

Corsicana — Voters in the Corsicana Independent School District may be asked to vote on a revised school bond proposal in November, CISD Superintendent Dr. Diane Frost said Saturday, after district voters defeated a $54 million bond.

The final vote tally in Saturday’s election was 818 against, and 561 in favor, of issuing $54 million in bonds that would have built a new middle school, paid for improvements on several campuses, upgraded the district’s libraries, incorporated new security measures, a new administration building and improvements to the CHS baseball field.

“Of course, I’m very disappointed,” Frost said following the vote. “The board worked together to present a bond package that would move our schools and our city forward, and we’re not finished ... we’ll re-group and see if we can get a plan that’s solid and our community will support and come back in November."

Frost said she would be talking with the school board about “separating the bond plan into separate elements.” She said the way the defeated bond was structured with the different components of the proposal, much of the work was already done.

“It’s possible that they will be very similar,” she said. “I don’t know that they’ll be exact, but they will have the same components because those are the things that our schools and our students need.”

CISD Board President Kerri Donica said worry about the economy may have impacted the voters in turning down the bond, which would have meant a nearly 16 cent increase in school taxes for district property owners and businesses.

“I know Corsicana cares about our kids,” she said. “I think folks are perhaps just worried about the economy. It’s the only explanation I have.

“The CISD board worked hard to deliver a program that we thought was important and necessary for our kids and our teachers,” Donica said. “We will do everything we can, within the confines of our existing facilities and budget, to provide for our students’ success.”

The next meeting of the CISD Board of Trustees is scheduled for May 20.
