The Navarro County Commissioners Court voted Thursday to lift the burn ban that has been in effect in the county.

Commissioner Kit Herrington, presiding over the meeting in the absence of County Judge H.M. Davenport Jr., said the KBDI Index — a resource used to measure the severity of drought conditions — had fallen to a level of 399. A KDBI level of 575 typically triggers a burn ban.

“Over the next two weeks we should receive some additional rain,” Herrington added. He said that Anderson and Freestone counties had dropped their burn bans.

Commissioner James Olsen of Precinct 4, and Dick Martin of Precinct 2, also urged caution when conducting any burns due to windy conditions the county is experiencing today, and that are forecast for the weekend with a weather front approaching.

“The wind is very high out there,” Olsen said. “Just because we are lifting the burn ban does not mean if the wind is blowing like it is today that it would be smart to burn.”

The vote to remove the burn ban “with caution” was approved by a vote of 3-0. Davenport and Precinct 3 commissioner David “Butch” Warren were not in attendance at Thursday’s meeting.
