Message from the Mayor: Busy time of year

By Chuck McClanahan
Mayor of Corsicana

— Dear Citizens,

First I would like to wish you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving. This is the time of year I reflect on how blessed I am with family and friends and how much I have for which to be thankful. It is also the time of year the bustle begins.

The City is preparing decorations around town this year. A long-time city resident, Dustin Taylor with Robinson Taylor Industries, facilitated a wonderful gift from the Parks Mall in Arlington. They are changing the decorations they use and he made sure the City of Corsicana had the opportunity to receive numerous displays that you will see throughout town. If you know Dustin, please tell him how much we appreciate his thinking of the City of Corsicana.

In addition, the City will be decorating Community Park with the help of Doug Coursey, owner of Grass Choppers, Travis Steele, Parks & Recreation and Public Works employees. Other areas being decorated are the Downtown Visitors Center, Pocket Park and entrances to the City. The Festival of Lights organization will be decorating Bunert Park. Please enjoy these displays and I hope you are proud to share these with family and friends from out of town!

Friday, Dec. 6, marks the traditional Downtown Lighting Celebration hosted by Main Street and the Parks & Recreation Departments, featuring extended hours and discounts at many businesses and the lighting of the downtown Christmas lights. Memories by Melissa will be at the Pocket Park from 3 to 5 p.m. taking pictures with Santa Claus, and street tacos will be served while they last. They were great last year. The Corsicana High School Acappella Choir will perform at 5 p.m. and fireworks will follow.

The next night, Saturday, Dec. 7, finds the return of the Parade of Lights beginning downtown around sundown. The parade will begin at Third Avenue and 13th Street and will be led by Grand Marshall, Santa Claus. The parade is being coordinated by Dennis Thornberg and he can be reached at 903-872-2133. The Warehouse Living Arts Theater will present the Nutcracker Dec. 4 thru Dec. 8, for more information contact the Warehouse at 903-872-5421.

Holiday gift giving is right around the corner, now is a great time to enjoy shopping in downtown Corsicana. There will be a gift-wrapping extravaganza downtown this year on Dec. 14 and Dec. 21. Shoppers can bring gifts of all sizes to selected stores on specific days and have wrapping done in return for a donation to local non-profits. For more information contact Christie Smith at Double Trouble Duds at 903-875-2366.

For over a hundred years, downtown was the heart of Corsicana. A vibrant downtown is vital to the economic success of the City. I hope you’ll join me in enjoying many of these holiday events downtown, and while you’re there, stop in and rediscover the downtown merchants. You may be surprised at what you find!
