Corsicana — Tiger Stadium to upgrade turf

The Corsicana Independent School District Board of Trustees voted Monday to accept a negotiated agreement with the supplier of the artificial turf at Tiger Stadium to replace the turf with an “upgraded” surface at a deeply discounted rate.

The district has been negotiating with the firm through an attorney to address concerns about the condition and wear of the current turf, now about six years old. Manufacturing flaws have affected the turf, and the supplier offered to replace the existing model at no charge with only the two years of warranty remaining, or replace it with an “upgraded” version for a cost of $175,000, and a full eight year warranty.

District Superintendent Dr. Diane Frost said the upgrade will be paid for from revenues generated through stadium rentals for playoff games, a fund which has also provided upgrades for safety gear as well.

AVID program report presented

Shade Boulware updated trustees on the district’s AVID program. AVID is an acronym for Advancement Via Individual Determination. The program is designed to reach students who may be the first in a family to attend college, be of low income level or have special circumstances. Advanced guidance and support helps to develop the students into college-ready applicants through the development of habits, skills and behaviors to use knowledge and skills.

"It's a good program, it's good for kids, it's good for the community," Boulware said.

STAAR/EOC report shows progress

Carla Stanford, executive director of curriculum and instruction, updated trustees on the district’s STAAR scores, the last results just received by the district. Standord said the district’s test scores showed gains in several areas including several “sub-populations” but that some disparity still exists among the groups. Stanford said the district is scoring above state levels in many subjects and grade levels, noting strong gains in 5th and 8th grade math scores.
