Corsicana — Elizabeth Smart, the kidnapping survivor and child victim advocate, will be coming to Corsicana to speak to the annual Healthy Woman banquet in January.

Smart was kidnapped in 2002 as a 14-year-old from her home in Salt Lake City, Utah, and rescued nine months later from her kidnappers.

Brian David Mitchell, her kidnapper, was just sent to prison in 2011, after a long delay wherein he argued he was mentally unfit to stand trial. His co-conspirator, Wanda Barzee, was also eventually convicted and sentenced.

Following her rescue, Smart was the subject of a book co-written by her and her parents, and a made-for-television movie.

She is also the head of the Elizabeth Smart Foundation, which seeks to educate the public and lawmakers about child abductions.

In addition, she is involved in the National AMBER Alert, The Adam Walsh Child Protection & Safety Act and is also a correspondent for ABC News.

Her presentation will tell her story, and will discuss topics such as overcoming adversity and not allowing your past to dictate your future, according to Anna Paul, who helped book Smart for the Corsicana event.

Tickets are $30 per person and includes the meal, and will be on sale in the Healthy Woman/Marketing Coordinator office at Navarro Regional Hospital beginning Nov. 19, Paul stated.

Companies and individuals interested in sponsoring a table or becoming a Healthy Woman partner can also contact the hospital’s marketing department at (903) 654-6871.
