City to decide on billboards

The Corsicana City Council will be asked to make a decision on the billboards around the city when the group meets in regular session at 6 p.m. Tuesday at city hall, 200 N. 12th St.

The issue came up recently when a billboard company asked to be able to upgrade a wood-framed billboard on Seventh Avenue into a metal-supported billboard that can be changed with revolving flaps that can change the front of the board to show up to three messages in a short space of time.

The city’s current ordinance doesn’t allow for new billboards, since they’re considered aesthetically unpleasant, but seven billboards were up before the ordinance was passed, so they’re protected so long as they’re well-maintained.

The proposed change would allow for a one-time upgrade to a metal support for any of those billboards.

The sign ordinance is also on the workshop agenda, an informal meeting that starts half an hour before the regular meeting.
