Corsicana — A listing of meetings and events of interest from throughout Navarro County

Through Oct. 26

The 32nd Annual Piecemakers’ Quilt Show will take place at the Warehouse Living Arts Center, 119 W. Sixth Ave. Admission is free. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday; and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays. A quilt will be raffled off as part of the annual show. Oct. 18-20

Angels of Corsicana Troop Support will hold its first yearly garage sale, bake sale with barbecue sandwiches and potato salad in order to raise funds to ship boxes to our military for Christmas. All volunteers or donors are urged to be at the Angel Room, 1020 N. Bus. 45 on Thursday morning (10-18) from 8 a.m. to noon to set up and be assigned schedules. Garage sale will be held Friday, Oct. 19 and Saturday, Oct. 20. For more information call Jean O’Connor at (903) 851-2560.

Kerens Cotton Harvest Festival will be held in downtown Kerens, complete with the Cotton Row Run 1K/5K Walk/Run, vendor booths, hot air balloons, food, music, crafts, lots of fun events for the whole family.

Hamilton-Beeman Memorial Association will hold its annual meeting at 11 a.m. at Retreat City Hall. Pertinent business as relates to the cemetery will be discussed. There will be a memorial remembrance of all those who passed away this year and are buried at the cemetery. A pot luck luncheon will follow the business meeting. Everyone is welcome, and those who have family buried at Hamilton-Beeman cemetery are especially encouraged to attend. Oct. 20

Cotton Row Run, the 1K and 5K Fun Run/Walk sponsored by the Kerens Ex Students Association will kick off with registration at 7 a.m., then a 8 a.m. start. It will be followed by a Pancake Breakfast at the KESA Building, all which benefits the KESA Scholarship Fund. There will be food, arts and crafts, entertainment, live music and more all day at the Kerens Cotton Harvest Festival, with a street dance at 7 p.m. that night, featuring Ira Bradford and Bustin’ Loose.

  • YMCA warns against woman fraudulently soliciting funds

    A woman has been soliciting funds, falsely portraying herself as representing the YMCA, Executive Director Terry Seth reported late Wednesday afternoon. A business owner in town informed Seth a lady solicited his business, saying she was raising money for the YMCA for a program for deaf children. Seth says the YMCA does not have such a program.

  • Wine and walking

    About a dozen local businesses are opening their doors for the Derrick Days Wine and Cheese stroll this year, and many are only doing it as an open house opportunity.

    The stroll is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. April 24 in downtown Corsicana. It's free and open to the public.

    In April 2013, the city of West was forever changed after an explosion at a fertilizer plant killed 15 people and altered the landscape of the tiny Texas town. A year after that deadly blast, the city will stop to remember that fateful day and pay tribute to those who were lost, including Navarro County firefighter Perry Calvin, one of the first responders killed by the blast.

  • Navarro College seeks public input at Town Hall event

    Community perception of the role Navarro College plays, and how it can better serve Corsicana and Navarro County is the goal of a Town Hall meeting called at the college for Monday, April 21. The town hall presentation will run from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Dr. Richard M. Sanchez Library on the Corsicana campus.

    After the hail storm Monday, the Corsicana Police Department began receiving several calls from citizens reporting roofing contractors going door to door soliciting to inspect and repair roofs from possible hail damage.
