Jenkins pleads not guilty at arraignment

Corsicana — Sandy Jenkins pleaded not guilty Thursday at an arraignment hearing in U.S. District Court in Dallas. The Corsicana man is charged with 10 counts of mail fraud. He is accused of stealing $16.5 million from his former employer, the Collin Street Bakery.

Jenkins was not offered bail.

A detention order was signed by Judge Irma Carrillo Ramirez on Aug. 13, remanding him to federal custody. He remains in jail, according to U.S. Attorney General’s Office spokeswoman Kathy Colvin.

Trial is set for Nov. 18 before federal Judge Ed Kinkeade.

If found guilty, Jenkins could face up to 20 years per count, as well as fines of up to $250,000 each.

According to affidavits filed by the FBI, Jenkins was the comptroller for the bakery and responsible for cutting all the checks for the company. He had a special computer and printer in his office for added security. Using his authority, Jenkins allegedly wrote 888 checks on the company’s bank account to pay his personal bills.

The FBI estimates he and his wife were spending about $250,000 a month. Jenkins’ salary at the bakery was $55,000 a year.

The various documents filed by the FBI, as well as a civil suit filed the Collin Street Bakery against Jenkins, allege that Jenkins used the stolen money to fund a lavish lifestyle of first-class travel, a second home in Santa Fe, N.M., and extravagant purchases of jewelry, watches, and cars. The scheme allegedly went on for eight years before a clerk caught an error and turned it over to Jenkins’ supervisors. They confronted him in June and then fired him.
