Fans of live theater will get two opportunities in coming days, with two productions taking the stage by local student actors.
Corsicana High School students are performing “Antigone,” the classic play by Sophocles at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Monday in the Corsicana High School auditorium.
This is a shortened, slightly modernized version of the Greek tragedy, and Thursday’s performance will be the high school’s first “dessert theater,” said Gloria McLuckie, fine arts coordinator for the district, and director of this production.
“It’s where you come to watch a show and during intermission you get desserts,” she explained. “It’s all home-made. I have teachers bringing some. The parents are making some. I’m bringing some.”
Admission to “Antigone” is $5. Only Thursday’s performance will feature sweets. Monday’s performance is calorie-free.
The young actors will also be taking their version of “Antigone,” on the road, with a one-act play competition Nov. 6 at the Texas Renaissance Festival near Houston. They’ve been working on the play since September.
Navarro College’s Theatre Department is presenting three one-act plays by William Inge — an “Inge Binge” — with performances at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday in Dawson Auditorium.
The performances run about 1 hour and 15 minutes, and all are free and open to the public.
The three plays to be performed are “The Strains of Triumph,” “People in the Wind,” and “To Bobolink, For Her Spirit.” Inge is the American playwright best known for his works “Splendor in the Grass,” and “Bus Stop.”
Participating in the production are student actors Gus Allen, Taylon Black, Endia Cannon, Kaitlin Canon, Beth Caton, Philip Conley, Jake Defoore, Jamonte Gentry, Delilah Harris, Ema Hebron, Jonathan Heisner, Chris Hills, Mae Joles, Keith Jordan, Heath McCullough, Tia Payne, Trey Reyna, Jasmine Rutherford, John Smith, Lisette Takahasi, Mahlon Ware, and Forrest Wigington.
Dr. Shellie O’Neal is directing the plays.
