TEA's Williams visits CHS, Collins Middle School

Corsicana — The state’s top teacher spent Thursday afternoon in Corsicana, visiting Corsicana High School and Collins Middle School.

Texas Education Commissioner Michael Williams is on the road talking with teachers, administrators, some parents, and with students as well.

The Corsicana stop was part of a statewide tour for Williams, who plans stops at schools in all 20 education regions in the state.

“I think its helpful to see what’s going on in the classrooms, and what I see is teachers are teaching, and students are learning,” Williams said.

Williams said the opportunity to talk with administrators across the state is vital for the agency that oversees the educational system in the state.

“We talk about how the things that we do in Austin impact folks here on the ground — what is it that we need to do more of, and quite frankly, what is it that we need to do less of,” Williams said.

A common theme that Williams is hearing in his visits across the state — the funding of public schools.

But he’s also hearing about the need to talk about successes as well.

“What they really want us to do is tell the story about what great things are happening in terms of public schools across this state,” Williams said. “That is a story that not often gets told, and the commissioner of education has a small ‘bully pulpit’ that I can use to tell that story.”

While at Collins Middle School, Williams took a tour of the campus, including the Ag Mechanics class where he visited with students and instructor Larry Acock. Several members of the CISD Board of Trustees also met Williams while at Collins.

“It was an honor to have Commissioner Williams visit Corsicana ISD,” said CISD Superintendent Dr. Diane Frost. “To have him on campus at the high school and middle school, and spend time with our students and faculty, means he’s gaining valuable insight. I appreciate his dedicated attention regarding public education in Texas including Corsicana ISD.”
