Town West Nile-free, spray schedule reduced by half

Corsicana — Thus far, it’s been a successful year in the war on West Nile Virus, a potentially deadly disease spread by mosquitoes.

Last year, eight cases of the dangerous virus in people were reported to the Corsicana Health Department.

“We’ve had no cases this year,” said Emily Carroll with the health department.

“It is reportable. We usually get notified immediately if a positive blood test comes back,” she said. “At this time, not one lab-confirmed case has been reported to us.”

The City of Corsicana has gotten fewer calls about mosquitoes, as well, and a few weeks ago actually cut back on the amount of spraying for the insects, according to City Manager Connie Standridge.

“We started spraying earlier this year, in May, because they were starting to spray earlier in the Dallas area, and we wanted to get out in front of any problems,” she said. “We started earlier this year than in previous years but we’ve curtailed it in the last few weeks because it doesn’t seem to be a big problem. There’s not a big mosquito population.”

Instead of spraying around creek beds once a week, the city is making its rounds every two weeks.

“Because of the dry weather we cut our spraying back to half of what it was during the peak time,” she said.

“Generally, we’ve not received the calls we’ve received in previous years,” she said. “We’re still spraying, just not as much.”
