Years ago, an idea to construct a Veterans Memorial in downtown Kerens began from a seed in the mind of Bobbie Jo Darby, herself a veteran. Though she now resides at Heritage Oaks, (she is Kerens class of 1942), she and her friend J.C. “Pete” Selman (class of 1944, and a veteran who lives in Pflugerville) wanted to place a veterans memorial in the Garden Park to honor all the veterans who came from Kerens.
“Pete started the fund, but KESA (Kerens Ex-Students Association) would do the majority of it, since the bylaws state that KESA is for providing scholarships and doing community projects,” said Tresa Darby, wife of Darby’s nephew, Tommy.
“Recently, a lot next to the Garden Park was donated to KESA for the Veterans Memorial by Ken Bain, Joyce Anne Bain Jackson, Kay Bain Moffet and Lee Bain. The lot next to that was purchased by Danny and Nancy Combs and donated to KESA for a memorial park,” she continued.
The long-time Kerens Masonic Lodge is closing, and its members going to the Corsicana Lodge, so for its “swan song” the Lodge donated $10,000 to KESA for the Veterans Memorial.
A committee is currently working on a design for the memorial, and fundraising will now begin in earnest with a May 25 Fish Fry at the KESA building in downtown Kerens. It will be 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., adults plates at $8 and kids 10 and under for $4.
Donations will be accepted for the project.
Russ Crawford is organizing the Fish Fry with the help of Lanelle Crawford and Lynn Goodwin. Danny Combs is the chairman of the Veterans Memorial committee, so for further information, contact him.
