Relay for Life gears up

Paint the Town Purple event to raise awareness

Corsicana — Relay for Life of Navarro County is partnering with the Citizens of Navarro County this year in the month of May 2013 to raise awareness of  Cancer with “Paint the Town” and County Purple Campaign. Relay is an annual cancer-fighting event to raise funds to help the citizens of Navarro County. Each participant of the Relay for Life event participates in order for our city and county to have funds to help during the cancer journey. Cancer is 24/7/365.

2013 local awareness project is to educate the citizens as well as assist Survivors, Caregivers, friends and neighbors with the information needed to participate in the services and programs available in Navarro County. Relay is not only about raising the money but to raise awareness as to where the money goes in our community.

Corsicana and Navarro County want you to help raise awareness of Relay for Life and encourage more support for the families of our community. Annot Walthall, event chair, said, “It’s a win-win for our community. The Purple all around town presents an opportunity to answer questions raised and give information the American Cancer Society Board of Navarro County represents.”

Becky Long, committee chair for “Paint the Town Purple” is excited about this year’s event Showing Your Support and encouraging those going through the journey of cancer.

“So jump in. You will see purple, purple, purple around town and the county,” Long said. “I encourage you to use your imagination and go for it. If you need ideas just google ‘Paint the Town Purple’ and get an idea of how you can show your support with purple.”

Long gives a shout out to Community National Bank and Trust and Wal-Mart 2012 Campaign Cancer Awareness T-shirts, also Wally’s Card and Party Factory, Chili’s and Wright Dental for their awesome window displays of cancer awareness.

Purple is the symbolic color of cancer awareness, and Long encourages the first of May painting the color purple in any manner you wish to show your support so citizens of Corsicana will know without a doubt “Fighting Back against Cancer” is a passion of our community.

Relay for Life is a passion each participant has to give a gift to our community. Relay touches lives. Get involved, and make a difference in the battle against cancer. Show your Hope by showing your purple. If someone asks what is this purple thing, you may tell them it is “Relay for Life” to help families on the cancer journey not have to struggle with questions that have answers, services and programs right here in Navarro County.

The Relay for Life of Navarro County event is May 17 from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. on the Navarro College Campus. Join our community to “Make a Difference.”
