Firefighter laid to rest in Frost

Corsicana — Editor's note: Corrected at 10 a.m. Friday, May 3, to reflect the prayer broadcast on fire channels was read by Charles Hanson of the Navarro Mills Volunteer Fire Department.

At 9 a.m. Thursday, police and fire scanner radios in Navarro County heard a series of tones broadcast.

Then, a final “page out” for firefighter Perry Calvin, the Frost man who lost his life April 17 in the explosion at the West Fertilizer.

It’s a tradition among the brotherhood of firefighters — the final salute to a fallen hero. A similar observance was held at the memorial service in Waco last week.

After the tones sounded, Charles Hanson of the Navarro Mills Volunteer Fire Department shared a prayer for Calvin via the radio broadcast as one final tribute.

Firefighters from throughout Navarro County, and the state, attended Calvin’s funeral service held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Hillsboro. A caravan then drove to the Frost Cemetery, Calvin’s final resting place.

He was attending an EMT class in West on April 17 when he joined other firefighters in the call to a fire at the plant. A total of 14 first responders lost their lives in the horrific explosion.

Calvin leaves behind a wife, two young children, and a third on the way.

A benefit fundraising event for the Calvin family is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in downtown Corsicana on Third Avenue between Main and Beaton, and south on Beaton Street to Fourth Avenue. All proceeds raised from various activities slated for the evening will go to benefit the Calvin family.
