Pedestrian struck by train dies

Corsicana — A 61-year-old Corsicana man struck by a freight train on April 21 has died.

Ronald Shaw was struck at about 6:35 p.m. Monday, April 21, on the Union Pacific tracks just east of Seventh Street/Business 45. He passed away Thursday, May 1, 2014, at Parkland Hospital.

According to Corsicana Police Chief Randy Bratton, Shaw was reportedly bending over on the railroad tracks as the train approached.

The conductor of the train told police the train’s warning whistle was sounded several times, and the trains emergency brakes applied after spotting Shaw on the tracks, but Shaw did not react to the sound or the approaching train.

Shaw was taken to Navarro Regional Hospital following the accident, then transported to Parkland. He was transported by ground ambulance because weather conditions that night prevented the air ambulance from being able to fly, Bratton said.

Funeral services for Shaw are scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, May 5, 2014, at Corley Funeral Home in Corsicana. Visitation will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 4, 2014, at Corley Funeral Home.
