City, county to discuss services

Corsicana — The Corsicana City Council and the Navarro County Commissioners Court will meet in a joint session at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at city hall, 200 N. 12th Street, for the purposes of talking about the services shared by both.

Under the current system, the city provides services to all the residents of the county, and the county reimburses the city for those services.

Examples include the ambulance service, fire protection, animal shelter, economic development and the library.

In a number of instances, the city has asked for more money for those services, and the county has resisted paying more.

The city and county have worked out a few arrangements, specifically, the city now charges per call for fire protection outside the city limits, which has cut down on the number of times the county dispatches city fire trucks to rural fires.

Each year, the two groups meet at least once to discuss the requests, and to prepare for the three-month-long budget process that culminates in the city and the county budgets in September. The fiscal year for most local governments starts on Oct. 1.
