Kerens band wins UIL Sweepstakes

Kerens — It’s sweet music to the ears for Kerens Bobcat Band fans. The award winning band made school history — again.

For only the fifth time in the 75-plus year history of the band program, the band earned the highly sought-after UIL “Sweepstakes” Award. This is the first back-to-back UIL “Sweepstakes” Award to be earned by the Kerens Bobcat Band. The Bobcat Band was one of only two bands in a region with 17 competing 1A bands to earn a “Sweepstakes” and the only band to earn the award last year and this year.

In order to win a “Sweepstakes,” the band must earn a “First Division” in each of the three UIL competitions — Marching, Concert, and Sightreading. The band earned a “First Division” in UIL Marching on Oct. 24. They completed their contest season on Mar. 6 by earning a “First Division” (awarded by all six judges) on the stage and the sightreading room at the UIL Concert and Sightreading Contest.

The UIL “Sweepstakes” Award was previously earned by the Award Winning Kerens Bobcat Band during the 2000-01, 2003-04, 2008-09, and 2011-12 school years.

The contest program prepared by the band highlighted the strong musicianship of the band students and was much more difficult than what is required by a 1A band at contest. UIL requires that 1A bands prepare a march and two other “Grade 1” pieces of music from the state list. The Bobcat Band performed the “Grade 3.5” march entitled “Emblem of Unity,” and two “Grade 2” pieces entitled “In A Quiet Place” and “Broken Bow.” This program exceeds the requirements of a 2A band and is more closely compared to a program required of a 3A band program at contest.

The band directors would like to express their special thanks to the following four senior band members for their unprecedented level of character and leadership: Philip Conley, Michael Kline, Kevin Townsel, and Ebony Sayles.
