Roy’s Cafe returns to downtown Corsicana

Corsicana — Roy’s Cafe is back in business, and Tuesday was like homecoming for many of the venerable downtown restaurant’s regular customers.

“I’ve been coming here for almost 50 years,” said Martha Collard. “I couldn’t wait for today.”

Collard said the food was the same as it’s always been, “delicious.”

She and many of her friends made Roy’s their daily stop for breakfast before it closed January 10, 2012, so the owners could focus their attention on Roy’s Backporch, a bar and grill next door.

Now, it’s the Backporch that is shuttered, while the daytime restaurant is open.

The restaurant is a joint venture of Don Denbow and Ricky Blackwell, who are also owners of Bill’s Fried Chicken.

Collard said she and her friends went to Roy’s for years. When it closed, they moved to Dee’s Diner (formerly Hashop’s). When the Diner closed, they moved to The Other Place. When that restaurant closed, they moved to The Remington, she said.

“It’s like coming home,” said Tony Collard, Martha’s husband. “I missed this place.”

At a large shoved-together table in the middle of the diner, a group of friends gathered around mid-morning to talk about everything under the sun and grab breakfast. They missed the bacon, one said, commenting that the bacon where they’ve been had bacon so thin you could read a newspaper through it.

About that time, a plate was served with Roy’s thick-cut bacon prominently splayed across it, and there were instant smiles of appreciation from the diners.

“This is like an old pair of shoes,” said Hartley Young. “This just fits pretty good.”

Roger Warner started coming to Roy’s back when he was in high school, about 48 years ago, and recalled coming down to the cafe on afternoons before his basketball games to have a soda or float. He and his wife, KathyAnn, like the atmosphere and the food.

“All your friends come in here,” KathyAnn said.

The new owners have renovated the restaurant, upgraded the kitchen and the dining room, and brought back the main cook, and many of the employees who worked at Roy’s Backporch. The Backporch is now undergoing renovations and may reopen down the road, said Richelle Perry, manager of Roy’s.

Roy’s Cafe is open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and the menu is mostly the same as it used to be, Perry said.

“We took fried chicken off the menu,” she said. “If you want chicken, go to Bill’s.”

They’re considering making some specials that aren’t on the menu available but that’s also down the road a bit, Perry said.

“We’re going to try to make some changes, but we’re going to stick with what we know first,” she said.
