Road comedy starts Thursday at WLAC

Busy fall begins with ‘Mama Won’t Fly’

Corsicana —  “Mama Won’t Fly,” a fast-paced comedy from the writing team of Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten, kicks off an active fall season at the Warehouse Living Arts Center.

A hilarious race against the clock begins when Savannah Sprunt Fairchild Honeycutt agrees to get her feisty mother all the way from Alabama to California in time for her brother’s wedding. Savannah’s problem: Mama won’t fly! So, they load up Mama’s old Buick and, along with the bride-to-be, drive to the West Coast.

The three travelers encounter outrageous situations and colorful characters on a one-of-a-kind road trip that will have you laughing all the way across the country.

James Maston Pritchett directs a cast that includes Norma Russell, Darlene Pleiner, Annot Walthall, Debbie Bigler, Sharon Goodman, Debbie Hanks, Irvin Horn, Randy Jones, Sandra McClure Mahood, Ron Motley, Kevin Painter, Grace Sowell and Adam Walthall.

“Mama Won’t Fly” opens at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12. Additional performances are Friday and Saturday evening, and Sept. 17, 19, 20 and 21 at 7:30 p.m., and a Sunday matinee on Sept. 15 at 2 p.m.

The Corsicana Children’s Company will offer classes beginning Sept. 16. Grades Kindergarten through second will meet Mondays from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Third through fifth grades meet Tuesdays from 4:30 to 5:45 p.m. Grades 6 and up meet from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Thursdays.

Also in September, WLAC will hold auditions for “Annie Get Your Gun” on Sunday the 22nd at 2:30 p.m. in the theater. Known as one of America’s best loved musicals, “Annie Get Your Gun” has principle and featured roles for seven adult men (18 and up), three adult women (ages 18 and up), two girls and one boy (ages 12 and up), several smaller speaking parts plus a large chorus of all ages. Production dates are Nov. 21-24, and it will be presented at the Palace Theatre.

Auditions for the timeless Christmas classic, “The Nutcracker,” will be held Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 at 6 p.m. Numerous principle, supporting and chorus roles are available for performers of all ages. Presented by the Children’s Company, “The Nutcracker” runs Dec. 4-8.

In addition to theater offerings, WLAC currently has an art exhibit featuring the works of talented local artists Lucy Williams, Helen Albritton, and Barbara Jones, and The Annual Piecemakers Quilt Show takes center stage in the month of October.
