UPDATE: March primary filing closes

Corsicana — Filing for the March 2014 Republican and Democratic primary elections came to a close Monday, and Navarro County Republicans will have two local contested races to decide.

Precinct 2 County Commissioner Richard “Dick” Martin has an opponent in the Republican primary in businessman Leon Tates, manager of McCoy’s Building Supply in Corsicana.

County Treasurer Frank Hull is facing a reelection challenge in the Republican primary from Ryan Douglas, who is a part-time employee in the treasurer’s office.

All other county offices up for election are unopposed with their Republican incumbents seeing reelection, including Justices of the Peace VIcki Gray of Pct. 1, Kirby Hill of Pct. 2, Jackie Freeland of Pct. 3, and Connie Hickman of Pct. 4; along with Pct. 4 Commissioner James Olsen, District Attorney R. Lowell Thompson, County Clerk Sherry Dowd, District Clerk Josh Tackett, and County Judge H.M. Davenport Jr.

Also contested locally in the Republican primary is the race for Texas State Representative District 8, pitting incumbent Byron Cook against challenger Bobby Vickery.

Along with the local offices up for grabs in 2014 are a number of statewide positions, including electing a replacement for longtime Texas governor Rick Perry.

Four Republicans and two Democrats are seeking to replace Perry in November. Attorney General Greg Abbott leads the GOP field, and State Senator Wendy Davis is the leading Democratic candidate.

Texans will also be deciding on candidates for Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Comptroller, Land Commissioner, Agriculture Commissioner, Railroad Commissioner, and a handful of judicial positions.

U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas) faces five opponents in his reelection bid on the GOP primary ticket in March. There are also five Democrats running in the primary.

U.S. Rep. Joe Barton (R-Ennis) has a primary opponent in the GOP primary with Frank Kuchar filling late Monday. Democrat David Cozad has also filed for the 6th District seat.

Navarro County Democratic party chairman Linda Mertz said Monday that there would be no Democratic candidates running for any county offices, other than her unopposed bid for county chairman.
