Farm and Ranch Seminar set Dec. 12

Corsicana — A multi-county Central Texas program for farmers and ranchers conducted by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service in District 8 is scheduled Dec. 12.  

The District 8 Farm and Ranch Seminar will be offered at 13 locations across Central Texas. The majority of the program will be online with live video of speakers from across the state.    

Private Applicators License holders must obtain 15 hours of CEUs every five years to renew/recertify their license; including two hours of Laws and Regulations, two hours of Integrated Pest Management (IPM), and any mix of these and General hours to equal the required 15 hours of CEUs. Licensed commercial and non-commercial applicators are required to recertify every year by obtaining five continuing education credits with one credit each from two of the following categories: laws and regulations, integrated pest management or drift minimization.

The Dec. 12 seminar will provide participants with the opportunity to receive up to eight CEUs.  Of these eight hours, four hours will be in General, one hour in Drift Minimization, one hour in IPM and two hours in Laws and Regulations. Licensed commercial and non-commercial applicators will be able to obtain their required five hours within the first five hours of the program.

Topics and speakers include:

• Laws and Regulations related to Pesticide Applicators presented by Local County Extension Agents;

• Aquatic Vegetation Control and Management presented by Dr. Todd Sink, Associate Professor & Fisheries Specialist, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, College Station;

• The Impacts and Management of Herbicide Drift presented by Jon Gersbach, County Extension Agent - Ag/NR, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Milam County;

• Feral Hogs’ Biology and Control presented by Dan Gaskins, Extension Assistant, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Gatesville;

• Managing Herbicide and Pesticide Application to Protect Water Resources presented by Dr. Diane E. Boellstorff, Assistant Professor and Extension Water Resource Specialist, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, College Station;

• Managing Invasive Species in Drought Conditions in Bermudagrass and Native Pastures presented by Hugh Aljoe, Consultation Program Manager, The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation, Ardmore, OK;

• Managing Fire Ants on the Farm by Dr. Sonja Swiger, Assistant Professor and Extension Livestock/Veterinary Entomologist, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Stephenville, TX; and

• Herbicide Protocols for Converting Introduced Pastures to Native Pastures by Dr. Larry Redmon, Professor & State Forage Specialist, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, College Station.

Program registration cost is $50, which includes lunch. Registration will begin at each of the 13 locations at 7 a.m. with presentations starting at 7:30 a.m. and running until 4:30 p.m. Persons interested in attending one of these programs on Dec. 12 can pre-register by contacting their County Extension Offices.
