Corsicana — They were there in all shapes, sizes and colors. There was even a cat.

And they all came for the fun of the 2013 Mutts and Strays Reunion put on by the Humane Society of Navarro County to honor rescue animals and others that have been adopted.

The four-legged canine guests of honor proudly wore red ribbons in honor of the occasion provided by HSNC staffers as they arrived.

Their “humans” also celebrated with a free hot dog dinner provided for everyone.

Fr. Ed Monk was on hand to provide a “blessing” for each animal in attendance, reaching out to touch each animal with a personal blessing by name.

“God gave us the responsibility to take care of all the animals,” Monk said before the ceremony.

The HSNC also presented four awards during the evening with special recognition to individuals, businesses and organizations who helped support the Society and its efforts.

Cargo Craft was named recipient of the “Best in Show” award. The local industry has provided the group with a utility box trailer as the top prize in the HSNC’s annual fundraising raffle.

Honored as “Faithful Friends” were Butch and Nomi Nelson, recognized for their work in making the “Bone Trophy” given out by the HSNC; the Corsicana Parks and Recreation Department, for allowing the organization to use several city facilities for its activities; and the Corsicana Daily Sun, in recognition of the newspaper helping promote HSNC activities.

With the help of some generous grants and the group’s fundraisers, it was able to spend $53,000 on the spay and neuter program this year for 525 dogs and 475 cats, according to figures shared by HSNC member Marsha McAlister.

“We’re so thankful that we can do this,” she said. The efforts of Humane Society members and volunteers were also recognized during the evening, for the countless hours donated in helping care for animals.

Special recognition was also given to Bittersweet Boutique of Corsicana. The downtown cupcake shop and eatery sponsored a fundraising event that helped raise supplies and cash for the benefit of the Animal Shelter this summer.
