Christmas in Action workers take to streets

Corsicana — On Saturday, Grace Community Church had volunteers blanketing the little house on West Fourth Avenue, with kids and teens working on the yard, and adults using power tools indoors.

It was a labor of love, from neighbors to neighbors, as Christmas in Action spread out across the city to work on home repairs for those who couldn’t do it themselves.

The house on Fourth was one of four projects the congregation took on this year, according to team leader Phil Smith.

“We replaced seven windows, both exterior doors and repaired siding and put on storm doors,” he said. “We had a great time. It was a really good ministry.”

The church had more than 20 people out there Saturday, despite the fact that they also did two projects the weekend before, and will be returning again next Saturday to finish off the Fourth Avenue house with a paint job.

“It’s not hard to find volunteers,” Smith said. “Once they get a taste of it one time they’ll come back,” he said. “It’s very much needed in our community, and very rewarding work.

“The little lady, after we replaced the seven windows and both doors, she said ‘I feel like I’m living in a mansion,’” Smith said. “How much better does it get than that?”

Volunteers from First Baptist Church worked three separate projects Saturday — on West 11th, North 23rd 1/2, and North 20th.

Verlene Ellis watched as the First Baptist crew installed new supports under a wobbly floor in her house. Among the volunteers were Corsicana Mayor Chuck McClanahan, Mike Gage, and Loran Seely.

“I really rate,” Ellis teased. “I’ve got the mayor working on my house.”

Falling serious, she looked over at the workers, who were oblivious to her attention.

“I don’t know what I did to deserve such a blessing, but I’m going to accept it,” Ellis said.

Christmas in Action teams will continue their work next weekend, with some working well into November to complete their projects. Volunteer groups busy at work this past Saturday represented local churches, youth groups, companies, and civic organizations.
