CHS marching band advances to Area

Corsicana — The Corsicana High School marching band will be competing Saturday in Area competition in Leander — the next step towards state competition.

The band was one of two 4A marching bands that advanced out of Regionals this past Saturday.

Unlike other UIL competitions, marching band school categories only compete every other year, and has only three levels — Region, Area, and State. The last time Corsicana got a chance to compete, they also went to Area competitions, according to Bre Osbourn, CHS band director.

The routine the band will perform is called “The Jungle Tango,” and is a fusion of Latin and African themes, with the songs “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” “Tico, Tico,” “The Habanera,” from “Carmen,” and “The Tiger of San Pedro.”

Because the arrangement is done specifically for the band, no one else will have that particular music, Osbourn said.

“It’s very visual-oriented, with big props and the color guard dressed as animals,” she explained. “It all interplays with the music. There’s lots of African hand-drums and Latin drums.”

Osbourn chose this routine because of the musical strengths in the band this year. Between the performers, band members and prop crew, about 145 students are involved in the performance.

This Friday, the band will perform the same routine at the football game against the Eagles in Lindale.

Twenty-three other bands will also perform in the Area competition.

“The kids are doing really good. They’ve done well embracing the visual style of the show and adapting. We’re real proud of them,” Osbourn said.

The three assistant band directors are Jeff Osbourn, Curtis Oakley and Brandon Nelson.

If the band advances out of Area competition, the state competition is the second weekend in November.
