Following a week long trial, a Navarro County jury deliberated just over an hour before finding John Michael Parnell not guilty Friday.
Parnell was on trial on a charge of continuous sexual assault of a child, which carried a possible punishment of life in prison without parole.
Navarro County District Attorney R. Lowell Thompson said he respected the jury’s verdict in the case.
“You have to respect the jury process and you have to respect the jury,” Thompson said. He said some of the jury members told him they were caught up over some “technical issues” of the trial.
Defense Attorney Michael J. Crawford said he believed justice was served with the not guilty verdict.
“I appreciate the jury’s service. They had to work hard. I appreciate the effort and time they put into the case,” Crawford said. He also praised the efforts of his criminal paralegal, Amanda Atkeisson, for her work on the case.
“It was a good trial, and I think justice was served.”
