Hable sisters branch out in new direction

Corsicana — The ladies at Hable Construction Inc. launched a new product line this week, with a little help from their friends.

Hable Construction, a textile/design firm based in New York City, was started by Katharine Hable Sweeney and Susan Hable Smith, two sisters raised in Corsicana. Their company was named for their grandfather’s 20th century road construction company. It has expanded its reach but they are most excited about the newest one.

With assistance from high school buddy David Yates, owner of Ropewalkers.com (a name also with Corsicana significance) Smith and Sweeney welcomed a new line of products called Gosluck after a fictional character used by their great-grandmother, the late Mama Turner, to keep them in line.

At gosluck.com, you have the ability to purchase fun items like flip flops, coffee mugs, postage stamps, note cards, even a yoga mat or iPhone cover — and the Hable sisters have an opportunity to put their fun designs on affordable items.

“This is a new collection,” Sweeney said. “It’s whimsical, esoteric, but for every day. Everyone can have a plastic plate, but it’s our design interpreted on something you’d use in daily life. Cheery design for cheery people.”

Yates suggested a year ago that Hable Construction needed an iPhone app. At the time, Sweeney belied the need. Yates had always been supportive of their business by having them as guests on his Home and Garden radio show based in Plano. All with Corsicana roots, the group met up in the Hable’s mother’s kitchen, and from there, the idea grew.

“We talked to him in April, and said we do need an app,” Sweeney said. “We have four collections of fabric, but never could explain to people what we were doing.”

Hable Construction artist Smith designs unique, fun, quirky fabrics which are marketed by Sweeney to textile companies, furniture companies, and more. At hableconstruction.com, you may choose a favorite fabric design, then order bags, hampers, pillows and more — all in the same fabric.

The Hable ladies thought it would be a great opportunity with Yates’ expertise to see all their fabrics in one place. Not only did he create an app for them, but updated their website and made it interactive. While discussing the ability to see all four collections from one website, Sweeney and Smith expressed how much they missed “making stuff” such as gift items, garden gloves, sunhats, etc. — items they no longer offer in their lines.

“A lot of people love our patterns, so we used our patterns to put on fun things, such as skateboards, plastic plates, postage stamps, things like that,” Sweeney said. “And it was fun to do it with someone from our hometown.”

“The collection is based on these fun, whimsical motifs I’ve drawn over the last two years, some of which are very child-like, but mostly adults buy the items,” Smith said.

Fun and playful combines with affordable, with Smith saying many prices are under $20, and allows them to satisfy requests clients have made for simple items like kitchen towels. The entire collection is made in the USA.

“Gosluck has a little something for everyone,” Smith said. “I needed a little burst of whimsy like this. I can cover all the holidays and do things people ask us for. It’s really fun being spontaneous, and creatively, it’s great — quick turnaround and available to the public.”

“In three to four months, we’ve kind of ‘rebranded’ our whole company,” Sweeney said. “It was time, we needed it. Now, we have a more fun, interactive way of looking at our products, we have a new line with Gosluck, and a good range of prices, and are changing product monthly.”
