Corsicana VITA — Volunteer Income Tax Assistance — is making plans for the upcoming tax filing season by adding a new location and incorporating appointment times.
The changes are designed to help improve operations for the program that assists the elderly and low-income individuals with tax return preparation, said Stuart Schoppert, coordinator of the program since its inception in 2007.
Volunteers will be available at two locations this tax season, Schoppert said — at the Corsicana YMCA each Tuesday and Thursday from 2 p.m. through 7 p.m. Jan. 29 through April 11, and at the Kerens Public Library on Wednesdays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. beginning on Jan. 30.
“We wanted to test working in locations other than the YMCA,” said George Burrell, volunteer coordinator for VITA. “We haven’t tried it in a couple of years, and thought this year would be a good time to try an additional location again.”
Also new in 2013, the VITA program will schedule clients for appointments to help better coordinate workflow and volunteer schedules.
“We’ll still work with ‘walk-in’ clients, but they might have to wait until a volunteer preparer is available to assist them,” Burrell said. Appointments can be scheduled by calling Burrell at (903) 879-2091 once the program starts up in January.
All preparers in the VITA program have to pass the IRS Basic Preparer Exam, which allows them to handle most simple returns. Some more complex returns may be referred to another preparer at the taxpayer’s expense.
The VITA program is still seeking volunteer tax preparers for the upcoming season, Burrell said. To find out more about volunteering for VITA service, call Burrell or Schoppert at (903) 875-9310. A training program is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 26 at Navarro College.
The Corsicana VITA site is supported by Community National Bank, YMCA, Navarro College, Workforce Network Inc. and Workforce Solutions of North Central Texas in addition to our great group of volunteer tax preparers.
