Ball joins Derrick Days’ schedule

Festival firming up plans, adding new events

Corsicana — Corsicana’s annual Derrick Days festival is firming up plans, and the addition of a new event is adding new cache to the fun.

An Oil Baron’s Ball is going to be the newest event on the schedule, to take place Friday, April 26 at the newly renovated Pace building at the corner of Beaton and Fifth Avenue.

Jimmy Hale, who restored the Halbert House to glory, has been renovating the building into office spaces, and he’s allowing the Derrick Days committee to use it as a location for the party, according to Fran Townes, chairman of the Derrick Days committee.

The ball will definitely be upscale, with single tickets priced at $150. A raffle for five items, each worth in excess of $1,000, will be offered instead of an auction. The idea for a ball is to get people involved who normally didn’t attend Derrick Days, Townes said.

The ball will also include an 8-piece band from Dallas to play classic music from the 1940s and ‘50s, as in crooners like Frank Sinatra, not Chuck Berry; and a chef from Dallas will be cooking up heavy hors d’oeuvres. The event will also have valet parking.

Friday will also see the traditional street dance, and the Remington is also having an event that night on the other side of downtown.

On Saturday, the Corsicana Parks and Recreation Department is once again hosting a Biker Bash and Poker Run, and the goal this year is to more than double the participation of 2012, said Darrell O’Sullivan, with the parks department. The poker run will take the riders on a 100-mile jaunt around the area, going to Rice, Italy, Hillsboro and Malone before returning to downtown Corsicana for more biker fun. Instead of a tattoo contest, this year’s biker rally will include a bike show, live music and a burn out contest. Cash prizes will be awarded for the best and worst poker hands, there will be trophies in the bike show, and the winner of the burn out will receive a big-screen television.

Sheriff Elmer Tanner will be the grand marshal in this year’s Derrick Days parade.

The Gospel Stage will include the groups Southern Joy, Cross Timber, Haynes Temple Church of Mexia, and CrossWay Praise Team, according to co-organizer Dan Layne. It’s being co-hosted by the Single Believers Ministries.

The Saturday event will also include a car show, chili cook-off, vendors, carnival and possibly the return of the basketball tournament.
