Corsicana — The War: Day by Day, Volume II 1862/63, the second in a series of special sesquicentennial publications from the Pearce Museum, is now available for sale at the Cook Education Center on the campus of Navarro College in Corsicana.

This is the second of a four-volume set that chronicles the Civil War using letters, diary entries, and other documents, on a day by day basis. Every entry is taken directly from the Pearce Museum’s Civil War collections and is a word-for-word transcription of the original document. Volume I, available, covers the period April 12, 1861 through March 31, 1862, while Volume II includes letters written from April 1, 1862 to March 31, 1863. Two more publications will follow on an annual basis.

Over 15,000 original Civil War documents make up the collections of the Pearce Museum. Letters from unnamed soldiers rest side-by-side with correspondence from some of the nation’s best-known military leaders from the war. Those documents, in conjunction with original maps, photographs, military orders, and period artifacts relay the very personal story of the Civil War, from the perspective of the men and women who lived it — day by day.

The Pearce Museum is offering this years’ publication, and the entire series, as its contribution to the nation’s Sesquicentennial commemoration. Through the first-hand accounts of the men and women who were there, and whose writings are preserved in the Pearce Museum’s collection, we can best honor their sacrifices.

The War: Day by Day, Volume II 1862/63 is available for $25.95 plus tax. It has a handsome 8 1/2 by 11 soft cover, and has a total of 395 pages. Included is an index for the soldiers and civilians who appear in this volume as well as an appendix with available background information. There are 12 chapters each with an introductory letter image.

Supplies are limited — early ordering is advised. The publication can also be shipped to you if you are unable to visit Corsicana. Those interested may also wish to purchase Volume I if they have not already done so.

If you cannot visit the Pearce Museum on the campus of Navarro College in Corsicana, call (903) 875-7596 for shipping information.
