Probe into lake fire fatality continues

Corsicana — Sheriff Elmer Tanner said Monday the investigation into a fatal house fire at Francisco Bay over the weekend is continuing.

Tanner said firefighters were called to the Francisco Bay subdivision of Richland Chambers Lake at 5:30 a.m. Sunday after receiving a 9-1-1 call reporting the fire. One person perished in that fire.

Capt. Terry Stovall of the Kerens Volunteer Fire Department said the home had received extensive damage from the fire when firefighters arrived.

“It had likely been burning for some time,” Stovall said. Firefighters from the Powell Volunteer Fire Department assisted Kerens in putting out the blaze.

The home was destroyed in the fire. Firefighters and sheriff's investigators remained on the scene throughout the morning Sunday as firefighters continued to battle hot spots from the fire.

Tanner said he has called for a state arson investigator to assist in the investigation of the fire and fatality, but added he had no reason to believe arson was a factor.

Justice of the Peace Connie Hickman ordered an autopsy to determine the identity of the victim.

Tanner said Monday his agency’s investigation of the incident is continuing.

Hickman did not know when the medical examiner’s report would be available.
