Sales taxes up for year

Slight dip in receipts for March

Corsicana — The monthly sales tax receipts for Navarro County show a slight decrease, reflecting a rebate to a company in the City of Corsicana. The receipts are from actual sales made in January.

Corsicana’s sales tax receipts were down about $7,000 from March 2012, but sales weren’t down, it was the result of a state audit, according to Finance Director Virginia Richardson.

“They deducted $7,000. We would have been pretty much right on, within $250 (of last year),” Richardson explained. “This was probably someone who protested what they had to pay from a previous audit.”

The payback pushed Corsicana’s monthly receipts below the previous March’s, but the city’s receipts for the year are still positive, at 3.4 percent higher than this time in 2012.

Because Corsicana is such a large retail center for the county, that also pushed the county’s receipts down, although the county is also doing well for the year-to-date.

Among the smaller cities, Kerens had a setback compared with last year, and that reflected in the monthly payment and in the overall tally of the year’s sales taxes. Rice had almost the same downturn in March receipts as Kerens.

Showing good returns are the cities of Oak Valley, Navarro, Angus, Mildred, Blooming Grove, Dawson and Emhouse.

The small town of Navarro’s March receipts showed a 275 percent increase over last March. While it wasn’t a significant amount, dollar-wise, it was a big jump from the previous year.

Mayor Vickie Farmer chalked it up to Internet or phone sales. The city no longer has a store.

“Normally, we get between $130 to $180 a month. Normally, we don’t get $48,” she said, referring to March 2012. Rather than this year being unusual, Farmer said last year was unusual and made this year look odd.

“Nothing’s been unusual,” she said. “I’m glad we get it, but the only thing I can think of is it’s Internet sales or something like that.”
