Corsicana — Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1009 will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014 at the Sirloin Stockade, 2508 West Seventh Ave, Corsicana. Membership is open to U.S. armed forces veterans who served on active duty (for other than training purposes) in the Republic of Vietnam between Feb. 28,1961 and May 7,1975, or in ANY duty location between Aug. 5,1964 and May 7,1975. The veteran must submit a copy of his/her DD Form 214 along with the application and dues. Members and guest are invited to come early and eat and visit prior to the meeting. We welcome any Veteran as an associate member who served honorably who does not meet the above criteria.
The National Association of Active/Retired Federal Employees (NARFE, Chapter 1191), will hold its monthly meeting at the Ryan Buffet Restaurant in Waxahachie from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tina Rider (the North Texas Longterm Care Ombudsman) supervises the ombudsmen in the Area Agency on Aging (AAA) in a 14-county area in North Central Texas and operates as part of the North Central Texas Council of Government (NCTCOG). The program she supervises provides residents in long-term care facilities with an objective resource to assist with any concerns they have about their care. Training for VITA volunteers (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) will take place from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at Navarro College. VITA site opens Jan. 28 through April 15. Volunteers would act as tax preparers for qualifying low income and elderly individuals. Shifts to work the VITA site are on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 to 5 p.m. or 5 to 7 p.m.
