Corsicana — A listing of meetings and events of interest from throughout Navarro County.
The Republican Party of Navarro County will hold its next meeting at 7 p.m. at Republican headquarters located at 111-B W. Third Ave. in downtown Corsicana. The Corsicana Preservation Foundation will present information regarding the Nov. 5 bond election to finance the renovation of the Navarro County Courthouse. In addition, the proposed states constitutional amendments will be discussed. There will be a social from 6:30 to 7 p.m., saluting the county elected officials. Woodmen of the World Lodge 5 will have its meeting at 6 p.m. in the Lodge Hall at 200 W. Oak Lawn. All members, their families and guests are cordially invited.
The Kinsloe House Past President’s Committee will present an informative program given by the new president of Navarro College, Dr. Barbara Kavalier. Dr. Kavalier will share insights into what is going on at Navarro College and where she sees the college going in the future. United Way of Navarro County will participate in United We Dine at Bittersweet Boutique from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. On this day during this time period, 15 percent of all purchases will go to support the community through United Way of Navarro County. Bittersweet Boutique is located at 112 N. Beaton St.
Around the World in 80 Bites will be held in the Corsicana High School Commons from 5:30 to 7 p.m. All proceeds benefit the CHS Junior/Senior Prom. Tickets may be purchase from any CHS Junior, or you may contact Misty Fletes at firstname.lastname@example.org. Tickets are $5 per person.
Blooming Grove Elementary School will hold a Spirit Carnival from 4 to 7 p.m. Come dressed in blue and white to show your school spirit, best dressed will win a prize. There will be BBQ, hotdogs, and prizes. Sponsored by the PTO.
Hope Center will hold its Fourth Annual Golf Tournament at 12:30 p.m. at Corsicana Country Club. This four-man scramble will have first place winners for both net and gross winners. Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. Funds raised will go toward underwriting the Hope Center: Saving Lives, Educating Parents, and Doing it Again Tomorrow.
Cotton Row Run will take place in conjunction with the Kerens Cotton Harvest Festival beginning with registration at 7 a.m., and shotgun start at 8 a.m. The race will begin and end near the rear entrance of the Kerens Alumni Center. Proceeds from this 5K Fun Run/Walk will go to the Kerens Ex-Students Association. Participants and sponsors are needed. There are several levels of sponsorship. This race is open to all ages, both genders. Awards will be given at 9:15 a.m. on Main Street near the Alumni Center. Blooming Grove Ex-Students Association will hold a visitation at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 19 in the Doc Garrison City Park in conjuction with homecoming festivities. Catch up with old friends and reminisce about the old days. The City Council will provide coffee and cookies at The Lions Den (downtown Blooming Grove). The Blooming Grove Historical Society will be open that day from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. There will be a barbeque sandwich lunch at the Blooming Grove High School cafeteria at 11:30 a.m. Registration will begin at 11:30 a.m. in the high school auditorium. The program for the Blooming Grove Ex-Student Association will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Classes honored in the program will be 1953, 1963, 1973 and 1988. The Navarro County Republican Women will host a program called “Restoration or Renovation.” Information concerning the upcoming bond election for the Navarro County Courthouse will be presented by Commissioners Dick Martin and James Olsen and County Auditor Kathy Hollomon. Social time and lunch begin at 11:30 a.m. The meeting and program will begin promptly at noon. The Corsicana Newcomer's Club will hold it's annual fundraising event at 6 p.m. at the Corsicana Country Club. You don't have to be a Newcomer to enjoy this fun event as the community is invited to come to this year's Blue Jeans, Boots & Bids auction, dinner and dance featuring music by Byron Haynie. A live and silent auction will be held. Proceeds raised from this event go to support local community non-profit organizations. Tickets are $25 per person. VFW Post 3366 will have a dance from 8 p.m. to midnight in the ballroom side of the VFW Post 3366 off of W. Hwy 31. Randy Blue and The Full House Band will be the entertainment for the evening. There will be a $5 cover charge at the door.
Navarro County NAACP Branch 6209 will hold its Sixth Annual Freedom Fund Banquet at the Martin Luther King Jr. Center, 111, E. Sixth Ave. at 7 p.m. Theme is “Overcoming our Past and Embracing Our Future.” Speaker is Carol E. Wise, executive vice president, chief operating officer for Dallas Area Rapid Transit. Special guest honorees are Mr. and Mrs. George Burrell, Dr. and Mrs. Charles Biltz, Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Williams, and Navarro County Habitat for Humanity Organization. Tickets are $20 each. The Blooming Grove Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. in the museum at 201 S. Fordyce St. in Blooming Grove. The speaker will be Elmer (Sonny) Boyd who is a retired detective with the Dallas Police Department and was involved in the investigation into the John F. Kennedy assassination on Nov. 22, 1963.
