The Blooming Grove Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. in the museum at 201 S. Fordyce St. in Blooming Grove. The speaker will be Elmer (Sonny) Boyd who is a retired detective with the Dallas Police Department and was involved in the investigation into the John F. Kennedy assassination on Nov. 22, 1963. Eureka Crime Watch will hold its regular monthly meeting at 1:30 p.m. at the Eureka United Methodist Church. Special guest will be Mildred ISD Superintendent Becky Burns who will provide updates on school programs, etc. The public is invited for this informative meeting and the fellowship which follows. Refreshments will be served.
Blooming Grove Crime Watch will meet at 7 p.m. in the Blooming Grove Historical Society building. Guest speaker will be Jenny Bratton, director of the Child Advocacy Center in Corsicana. Everyone is welcome to attend.
“An Evening of Honor” a musical performance to honor local veterans, will take place at 7 p.m. in the Fannin Elementary School gym and hosted by the Fine Arts Department. The event will feature patriotic music performed by the first, second and third graders, as well as a color guard from the Corsicana High School ROTC. Veterans from Fannin families will be special guests. It is free and open to the public.
American Red Cross will hold a blood drive from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 320 N. 15th St., Corsicana. In addition to helping save a life by giving blood, the Red Cross is also asking for donations of new winter clothing, such as sweatshirts and sweatpants, which are included on response vehicles when responding to house fires and disasters during cold fall and winter months.
The Navarro County Retired Teachers will meet at 9:45 a.m. Friday, Nov. 8, 2013 at Northwest Apartments Community Center, 1360 Northwest Ave. The program will be presented by Jean O’Connor, representing Angels of Corsicana Troop Support. Members of RTA are asked to bring the following items to be sent to the troops for Christmas: white or black crew socks, dried fruit snacks, breakfast or energy bars, hard candies individually wrapped, popcorn, individual coffee and tea packs, chocolate bars, hand/foot warmers, motel size hygiene items, foot or baby powder (trial sized), small packs of batteries, handy wipes, decks of playing cards, jerky, assorted snacks, soups, pens, pencils, small flashlights, toothpaste and toothbrush, hair comb and brush, nail clippers, or money for postage. Any items you can bring will be appreciated.
Blooming Grove High School student council will hold its first annual Turkey Trot 5K fun run at 10 a.m. at Blooming Grove High School on the cross country course behind the new gym. Pre-registration is Oct. 30 to Nov. 6. Participants can also register on race day from 9 to 10 a.m. Registration is $15, and prizes will be awarded. The Dawson National Honor Society is honoring its local heroes at a Veterans Day Assembly at 10:45 a.m. Nov. 11, 2013 in the Dawson gymnasium. All local veterans and their families are encouraged to get an information form from the Dawson High School front office or download one from our website and turn in or email to firstname.lastname@example.org no later than Wednesday, Oct. 30 so the NHS can honor you with a certificate of appreciation that day at the ceremony, or if your Vet can’t be in attendance a certificate will be mailed. The Corsicana Emergency Corps., located at 416 South 12th Street in Corsicana, will hold its regularly scheduled monthly meeting at 7 p.m. The general public is invited to attend. Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1009 will meet at 7 p.m. at the Sirloin Stockade, 2508 West Seventh Ave, Corsicana. Members and guest are invited to come early and eat and visit prior to the meeting. They welcome any Veteran as an associate member who served honorably.
The National Association of Active/Retired Federal Employees (NARFE), Chapter 1191, will hold its monthly meeting at the Sirloin Stockade restaurant in Corsicana from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2013. A representative from Blue-Cross-Blue Shield will be our guest speaker. The presentation will include an overview of the FEHB program and prospective changes to the program. Navarro Regional Hospital’s Senior Circle Chapter will celebrate its Fifth Anniversary with Boots and Bangles Expo and Dinner. Expo begins at 5 p.m. and event at 6 p.m. at the IOOF Event Center. Singers Byron Haynie and Taylor Parks will entertain. There will be a photo booth. Bring a non-perishable donation for the local food pantry. This event is free for Senior Circle members, and $15 for non-members (which includes a one-year membership). The Corsicana Newcomers' Club will hold its monthly meeting at Kinsloe House at 11 a.m. This meeting is early due to the Thanksgiving holiday. Blooming Grove VFD will hold a Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Fire station. Please come out and eat a fine stack of pancakes, and support your local Volunteer Fire Department.
A one day Driver Safety Program will be held 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 21 at Navarro Regional Hospital located at 3310 W. Highway 22 in Corsicana. The refresher course is designed for drivers 50 years of age and older, but is open to anyone. The cost of the course is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members. Attendees may qualify for reductions in automobile insurance premiums for three years upon completion of the course. For more information call 903-654-6892.
Richland Community Park will host a Sweet Shop fundraising event from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Russell Stover Candies in Corsicana. The store will donate 10 percent of purchases during the event hours to the park to help pay for a basketball court and other playground equipment.
