Gold All-Stars ousted by Blue All-Stars, 11-10

From Staff Reports

One Corsicana team is still alive, another was sent packing.

The Corsicana Blue All-Stars edged out the Corsicana Gold All-Stars, 11-10 in the semifinals of the Pony League Regional Tournament in Rowlett Saturday.

“The ball didn’t bounce our way a lot of times today,” Blue team coach Rusty Hitt said. “We were able to fight through it and hang on against a tough Gold team.”

Trace Shirley picked up the win for the Blue team, with Caleb Gunnels stepping in late to earn the save.

The Gold team was able to jump ahead in the first inning, followed by two additional runs in the top of the third inning.

The Blue team fired back in the bottom of the third, scoring five runs to take the lead.

Clay Carrell had a homer run for the Blue team, with Gunnels connecting for three hits while Hunter Denbow and Aaron Rainey each had two.

Heading into the seventh inning the Blue team had pushed it’s advantage to 11-4, but the Gold team wasn’t ready to give in.

The Gold managed to score six runs in the top of the seventh, but Gunnels ended the comeback on the mound for the Blue team and sealing their spot in the finals.

Joe West and Jared Hickey each went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Gold team, with Donovan Fields providing a big ground-rule double in the game.

The Blue team lost in there first game of the day, falling to Irving 6-0.

The Blue team will face Irving again in the championship game today.

Despite some depth issues going into the championship, Hitt said he likes his teams chance of advancing.

“We lost two pitchers who went to play with their select team,” he said. “We burned two pitchers in games today, so we have to piece it together.

“Luckily we have players on this team to do that and I think they can come together and get it done.”

Gold All-Stars 20,

Rowlett 9

The Gold team won their first game of the day, powering their way past Rowlett for a 20-9 victory.

Joe West capped off an 11-run fourth inning with a home run to left center field.

“After last night’s win the kids keep building confidence,” Gold team coach Dale Folmar said. “They are building and growing together as a team.

“It seems like we get behind in every game, but we the just scrap back and come through with a big inning.”

Jeremy Fowler picked up the win on the mound in relief, allowing four hits and three runs in 3 1/3 innings.
