Mildred clobbers Oak Cliff Life, 72-0

DALLAS — Draylon Sterling scored four touchdowns four different ways, and Mildred wrapped up the District 6-2A DII title without much resistance.

Sterling opened the scoring with a 9-yard run, and added a 67-yard punt return one minute into the second quarter as Mildred (8-1, 6-0) built a 28-0 lead. He added a 54-yard touchdown catch, and midway through third made it 65-0 when he returned an interception 37 yards.

Mildred quarterback Nic Shimonek topped 500 career completions, going 9 of 15 for 185 yards. He had four touchdown passes and added a 78-yard run down the left sideline. Jeremy Ballard had one of the touchdown receptions, and added two more scores on the ground.

Oak Cliff Life, a preseason playoff pick, fell to 1-8, 1-5. The Lions kept the ball for the entire fourth quarter, running 18 plays as the clock ran the entire second half. A touchdown pass was wiped out by an offensive pass interference call. The Lions got 71 of their 137 yards on the drive, and picked up five of their nine first downs on it.

  • Nic Shimonek Top shelf: Mildred QB Shimonek has put up dizzying career numbers

You can’t pull a four-inch thick book off the shelf, blow the dust off the cover and find it on the pages inside. A comprehensive digital database doesn’t exist to prove it. But there is little doubt when Nic Shimonek walks off the field the last time for the Mildred Eagles, he’ll do so owning every significant career passing record in the history of the Golden Circle.

Patrick Harvell doesn’t know how many kids he’ll have healthy Saturday morning. But he’ll need his trainer to do a yoeman’s effort. The Eagles have another football game to play. Mildred and Nocona went toe-to-toe, but the Eagles scored three of the game’s final four touchdowns after falling behind and limped out of Aledo with a 45-35 Region II-2A Division II championship.

Ultimately, the goal remains to win. But when you’re a defensive lineman, personal aspirations mean something. “I want the tackle across me to hate me, or fear me at the end of the game,” junior defensive end Nic Stone said. That’s a sentiment his teammates up front on Mildred’s defensive line can relate to. They all play with an edge, with a little bit of fury, an anger.
