Navarro County AARP will meet at 2 p.m. at Northwest Apartments Community Center, 1360 N. 13th St. The speaker will be a representative from Hospice of Cedar Lake. All members are urged to attend this meeting. Elbert Turner is president.



Basic free tax assistance will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Corsicana YMCA. This free tax assistance is generally available for those with incomes below $39,000 and senior citizens needing help.



March 29

Blooming Grove Masonic Lodge will present a golden trowel award to one of its faithful members at 2 p.m. For convenience it will be held at the Barry Masonic Lodge. Refreshments will be served. The public is invited.



Navarro County Animals at Risk Foundation will conduct a low-cost vaccination clinic from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Farmers Market, located on Business 45 between East Collin Street and East Sixth Avenue, next to the Corsicana Daily Sun. Blooming Grove Crime Watch will meet at 7 p.m. at Blooming Grove Fire Station. Navarro County Sheriff Les Cotten will be the speaker. Light refreshments will be served.



North Central Texas WorkForce’s Corsicana Center will host a “Workshop Center Orientation” at 10 a.m. and a job search workshop on “Resume Preparation” at 10 a.m. at its office, 720 N. American Legion Post 22, 632 N. Beaton St., will hold a fund-raiser, including a garage sale and bake sale, beginning at 8 a.m. There will be barbecue sandwiches and chips for $3, corn dogs for $1, and sodas for sale. The post will have a membership drive for Legionnaires, Sons of the American Legion, and Ladies Auxiliary. The Sons of American Legion will have a monthly meeting at 3 p.m. To attend the meeting, membership must be current. Also, Angels of Corsicana, a troop support group, will be at the post to accept items to send to the troops and monetary donations will be accepted to help with the cost of monthly mailing of packages to the military. Corsicana Masonic Lodge will present the Golden Trowel Award to one of its most-faithful members at 3 p.m. All masons, friends, family and the public are invited for this open meeting.



Kerens Library, located on South Colket Street, will have its grand opening at 10 a.m. Speaking will be Congressman Joe Barton along with other officials. The public is invited to attend, and refreshments will be served. The new library is the culmination of four years of fund-raising and contains a computer lab, meeting room, and display space.



Dawson Area Youth Sports Association will have a garage sale at B.D. Hubbard’s complex, west of Fullerton Street on State Highway 31 in Dawson. Proceeds will benefit Dawson youth sports. Reservations to drop off items of any kind that will sell (including only good clothing) may be made by calling Cecil Sanders at (254) 578-1669.



The second annual Volley for Child Victims will be held at the K. and Ida Wolens Special Events Center on the Navarro College campus. Proceeds will benefit the Navarro County Child Advocacy Center. Opening ceremonies will begin at 8:40 a.m. with the event to begin at 9 a.m. Volleyball teams will be made up from local law enforcement officers and emergency personnel. There will be a raffle for various items and concessions. Fox 4 Sports’ Mike Doocy will be the master of ceremonies. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Dallas Maverick dancers will sign autographs and have photos taken. “Elvis” will perform from 5 to 9 p.m. The public is invited to attend. Warehouse Living Arts Center Theatre, 119 W. Sixth Ave., will hold auditions for the comedy production “Nuptials” by Judy Simpson Cook at 6:30 p.m. The cast calls for five adult men and five adult women ranging in ages from late teens through 60s. Collins Middle School will host its “Tiger Night” from 6 to 7:30 p.m. for parents and their children who will attend CMS in 2008-2009. There will be a brief look at class options for students, extra-curricular activities and community resources that are available. Booths will be set up with staff available to inform future CMS Tigers of requirements and choices they will make for next school year. Community resource booths will be set up with information, and there will be drawings for prizes.

VOICE will offer the Texas Youth Tobacco Awareness Program, a state-approved program for minors charged with attempted purchase, consumption, or possession of tobacco and is designed to the mandates of Texas law. VOICE staff is certified to facilitate this program. The class will be an eight-hour program divided into four two-hour sessions. Classes will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. April 22, 24, 29 and May 1.
