ABWA

The Navarro Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association met April 14 at Kinsloe House in Corsicana.

The program was the “ABWA Navarro Chapter Woman of the Year.” All women are a “woman of the year” to someone. Dana Collins was chosen as the 2008 Navarro Chapter Woman of the Year. Her husband Randy Collins, daughters Alison and Whitney, and granddaughter Gracie were there to honor Dana. Her family told about her, with Whitney reading a poem she had written in honor of her special mom.

ABWA held the sixth annual scholarship golf tournament April 19 at Corsicana Country Club with 19 four-person teams signed up. Carl White Autoplex sponsored the hole-in-one prize of a new pickup or $20,000. No one won this year. Matt Vilade was the celebrity golfer. Vilade is a LDA long drive record holder with a drive of 473 yards; he is a 2006, 2007 and 2008 finalist in the world long drive championship. There was food, fun and prizes. Everyone had a great time and helped raise money to continue to help with scholarships.

The ABWA spring conference was April 25-26 in San Antonio. The theme was “Together We Are Better.” There were women from every walk of life and from all across the United States. The Navarro Chapter members in attendance were Dana Collins, president; Becky Long, recording secretary; Shirley Long, corresponding secretary; Sandra Palmer, chapter historian; Beverly Huntsman, membership chairman; and Rebekah Moss, public relations chairman.

The 2008 National Women’s Leadership Conference will be Oct. 2-4 in Covington, Ky. Women from all across the United States will be in attendance.

The Navarro Chapter ABWA is open to all women who reside or work in Navarro County. Regular monthly meetings are held at 6:30 p.m. the second Monday of each month at Kinsloe House, 618 W. Third Ave., Corsicana. The mission of the ABWA is to bring together businesswomen of diverse occupations and to provide opportunities for them to help themselves and others grow personally and professionally through leadership, education, networking support and national recognition.

For more information, contact Dana Collins, (903) 874-7800; Becky Long, (903) 599-4563; or any ABWA member.

The next meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. May 12 at Kinsloe House. There will be an election of new officers and spotlight on member Shirley Long. Guest speaker will be Jerry McClanahan. The program will be “Get Your Kicks on Route 66.”

McClanahan will share his passion of rediscovering Route 66. He has photographs as well as paintings of the historic “Mother Road.” Your time will be well spent catching up with McClanahan and his stories in his book “EZ 66 Guide for Travelers,” authored by McClanahan and published by the National Historic Route 66 Federation. This book makes for a very eventful time on the road with attractions to see along the way and games to play as you travel. So come out to see McClanahan and hear what he has to say about a very legendary road of the United States that spans 2,000 miles and still going strong almost eight decades later as an American icon.
