CPD nabs suspected shooter

Suspects in two armed robberies still being sought

By Loyd Cook

Corsicana police arrested a man Wednesday who confessed to discharging a firearm the night before.

Thomas Roger Davis, 26, of Dallas has been arraigned on an unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Kirby Hill set bond at $25,000. Davis was still in custody at the Navarro County Justice Center jail at press time.

CPD detectives Trent Parker and Chester Jones were the lead investigators for the case.

A patrol unit had been dispatched to the 600 block of East Collin Street about 10:18 p.m. Tuesday night on a report of shots fired. The officer took a report with a vehicle description.

Parker and Jones located the vehicle at a local motel Wednesday morning and ordered surveillance placed on it. When the vehicle left the motel, an officer followed it and “effected a traffic stop,” Parker said.

Davis was discovered to be in possession of a .25-caliber semi-automatic pistol and to be on parole for a 1996 burglary of a habitation felony conviction. Parker said Davis’ parole was set to be completed in 2009.

In other police activity this week, CPD officials are asking for assistance from the general public in obtaining information connected with two separate armed robberies.

At 10:45 p.m. Wednesday, the police department responded to Big Deli in the 1000 block of South Seventh Street. A clerk there reported a black male dressed all in black with a red bandanna covering his face entered the store with what was believed to be a large, semi-automatic handgun.

The robber took an undisclosed amount of cash and fled the scene.

Earlier in the day, about 5 a.m., a janitor working outside the Navarro Center was approached by a man who pointed a handgun at him and got his wallet.

CPD Sgt. Darrell Waller the robber ran from the location and was possibly seen getting into a maroon passenger vehicle.

The description was very close to the description of the Big Deli suspect — a black male, dressed in all black, with a red bandanna covering his face.

“The suspect descriptions are similar but we don’t know if they’re related or not,” Waller said. “Anyone with any information on either of these robberies can contact me at (903) 654-4911 or they can contact Crime Stoppers.”

Crime Stoppers will pay up to a $1,000 for any information that leads to an arrest and grand jury indictment in this crime or any other felony crime. Any one with information should call Crime Stoppers at 874-TIPS (8477).

You do not have to give your name.
