IGC: Staples will stop at schools, bakery

By Janet Jacobs

Texas Commissioner of Agriculture Todd Staples will be in Navarro County next week, promoting local agriculture goods, as well as careers in agriculture.

He’ll be in Corsicana on Tuesday, and in Kerens and Hubbard on Wednesday.

“He’s beginning the day at 10 a.m., to tour Carroll Elementary. He’ll be touring the school, and going to the cafeteria, eating with the children,” said Bryan Black, assistant commissioner for communications with the Texas Department of Agriculture.

Staples will be visiting a series of schools as the year begins, checking up on the food programs and talking to students.

After that, he’ll be promoting the Department of Agriculture’s 100th birthday bash, scheduled for Sept. 14 and 15 in Fort Worth.

“Then, he’s headed to the Collin Street Bakery, a GO TEXAN Member,” Black said. GO TEXAN is a Department of Agriculture program that markets Texas products around the world.

He’ll spend the night at his home in Palestine, then return to the area very early Wednesday, Aug. 28, to have breakfast with kids in Kerens.

Staples is scheduled to speak to fourth and fifth graders about good nutrition, and vocational tech students about careers in agriculture, explained Kevin Stanford, Kerens superintendent.

After about two hours in Kerens, Staples is scheduled to head to Hubbard, where he’ll eat lunch with children there.

On Thursday, he’ll be visiting the East Texas Food Bank in Tyler, a recipient of Texas products.

“He’s all about East Texas that week,” Black said.
