Bailey running as write-in for Precinct 1

By Bob Belcher

Larry Bailey is no stranger to the local political process, but his write-in candidacy for the Precinct 1 County Commissioner post is his first foray into countywide politics.

Bailey, 62, has served as a councilman and now as mayor for the city of Rice, and has also served on the Rice Independent School District Board of Trustees. He also served on the advisory council for Cedar Valley College in Lancaster.

The lifelong Navarro County native is ready to go to work for Precinct 1. He said he was frustrated with what he called “indecision” and lack of “urgency” in current leadership, and the condition of county roads.

“Our county roads have not been graded properly in years ... I do know how to grade a road,” Bailey said.

Bailey also said he would work to help bring available grant money to the county, something he said he was successful doing in Rice.

“We applied for these grants — the county should be able to do the same thing,” Bailey said.

“It goes back to what my Daddy taught me — help people ... We just seem to be sitting there doing what we have to do to keep the job.

“It’s not about the job. It’s about taking care of people and their needs,” he said.

Bailey has been a proponent of the power plants considering Navarro County as a location, mindful of the boost it would provide to the county’s budget.

“I would love to see $370,00 worth of road improvement in my precinct,” Bailey said. He said the plants could bring that much additional tax revenue to each precinct if they build here.

Bailey has been married to his wife, Barbara, since 1964. They have three children and six grandchildren.
