Oct. 25

The 11th annual Scarecrow Stroll will be held on Northwest Third Street in Hubbard. Residents along this street decorate their yards with scarecrows and other fall decorations. The street will be blocked off to drive-through traffic from 5 to 7 p.m., so you may stroll down this street and visit with residents and view their fall decorations.



Retreat Volunteer Fire Department, located at the intersection of Farm-to-Market Roads 2555 and 709, will have a garage sale, barbecue sandwiches for sale, a barbecue dinner and auction. The garage sale will start at 8 a.m. and continue until the end of the day. Barbecue sandwiches, chips and drinks will be for sale from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. A barbecue dinner with all the fixings and desserts will be from 5 to 7 p.m. or until it’s all gone. The auction will start around 6 p.m.



Navarro Elementary School will have a fall festival from 4 to 7 p.m. There will be food, games, prizes, bounce houses, raffles, costumes and a silent auction. Bring your family and friends and join in for lots of fun.



Blooming Grove High School Class of 1978 will have a reunion from 7 to 10 p.m. at La Pradera Restaurant, 1401 W. Seventh Ave. For more information, call Joann Ewers Pierson at (903) 874-5897 or Joey McClure at (903) 695-4212.



Barry Volunteer Fire Department will have a chili and soup fund-raiser from 5 to 7 p.m. at Barry Methodist Church. Your choice of chili, gumbo or chicken noodle soup, dessert and drink will be $6 a plate. Take-out meals will be available. There will also be a silent auction.



Navarro College’s Rotaract Club will have a canned food drive from 1:30 to 3 p.m. during the Navarro College homecoming pre-game tailgate party, held at Tiger Stadium parking lot. The food drive will benefit the Food Pantry of Navarro County.



Dawson Volunteer Fire Department will hold its fall fund-raiser at the fire station. Dinner will begin at 5:30 p.m. with barbecue and all the fixings. An auction will follow the dinner. You are invited to come out and bid on some homemade desserts and help support the Dawson VFD.



Oct. 25-26

Central Texas Quarter Horse Association will host a 5D speed barrel race weekend at the Navarro County Exposition Center. Win a saddle or buckle. Barrel exhibitions will begin at 11 a.m. with youth 4D to begin not before 3 p.m. followed by open 5D. Pole exhibitions to follow, youth 3D poles, open 3D poles (jackpot only).



Oct. 26

Dedication for Mildred Independent School District’s new facilities will be at 2 p.m. at the new elementary cafeteria. After a brief program and reception, tours of the elementary school, performing arts building and athletic training facility will be provided. The public is invited.



Oct. 27

Barry Masonic Lodge will have a stated meeting at 7:30 p.m. A meal will be served at 6:30 p.m. All masons are invited.



Unique Parents of Unique Children Support Group meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at Carroll Elementary, 1101 E. 13th Ave. The meeting is for parents, family members or guardians of children with special needs. You are invited to join in for some freaky fun, frightening food, and a special speaker. Child care will be provided. Door prizes will be awarded. Rice Elementary School will have a curriculum night. A PTO meeting will be held at 6 p.m. The “Weird Science Night” will begin at 6:15 p.m. with three rotations of science experiments in classrooms. At 7 p.m. a door prize drawing will be held for a gift of free groceries from H-E-B (must be present to win). All parents as well as anyone else interested is invited to attend this first curriculum night.

Piecemakers’ Quilt Guild will have its 28th annual quilt show at the Warehouse Living Arts Center, 119 W. Sixth Ave. Quilts will be on display from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. Admission will be free. On Oct. 29, there will be a drawing for the PQG 2008 donation quilt. The winner need not be present to win. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5 and may be purchased until the drawing. Several classes and demos will be given during the show, which will be open to the public. PQG members can participate in hand quilting the donation quilt for next year. Winkler Masonic Lodge will have a stated meeting at 7:30 p.m. A meal will be served at 6:30 p.m. All master masons are invited.

Navarro County Republican Women will meet at noon on the seventh floor of the Bank of America Building. The program will feature comments from local Republican candidates and/or representatives discussing their campaign efforts and current information. Members and visitors are welcome to attend. VOICE, in partnership with the Kerens Library, will offer La Voz para la Familia from 5 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays Oct. 28 through Nov. 20 at the Kerens Library. La Voz para la Familia provides an opportunity for adults to improve English and parenting skills while their children are assisted with homework or involved in other activities provided by staff. Workforce Solutions for North Central Texas will host a “Workforce Center Orientation” at 10 a.m. and a job search workshop on “Resume Preparation” at 10 a.m. at its office, 720 N. Oct. 31

VOICE will host its annual family fun fall festival from 2 to 5:30 p.m. in the Bank of America parking lot. The festival will begin at 2 p.m. this year to especially cater to smaller children during the first hour. Children and families of all ages are welcome and all activities are free of charge. These will be an obstacle course, bounce house, slide, games, face and hair painting, hot dogs, drinks, and prizes. Downtown Trick or Treat will be held from 3 to 5:30 p.m. There will be costume pictures in Pocket Park (photos by Memories by Melissa — two 4x6 for $12), bicycle giveaway, Halloween music by DJ Slicky D, pet costume contest and pet pictures, face painting, haunted house at The Art Spot, and spooky stories beginning at 5 p.m. at the Corsicana Public Library. There will a children’s costume contest at Card and Party Factory (100 S. Beaton St.) with prizes, but pre-registration is needed by Oct. 30 for the contest. Family Friendly Halloween will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. at The Cook Center on the Navarro College campus, sponsored by the Leo Club and planetarium staff. An eye-popping, child-friendly Halloween show will be presented every half hour in the planetarium, beginning at 4 p.m. with the last show at 7:30 p.m. There will be a costume contest for the kids at 6:30 p.m. with three age groups — 0 to 2, 3 to 5, and 6 to 8. A hay ride will be from 6 to 8 p.m. There will also be face painting and various games. American Legion Post 22, 632 N. Beaton St., will close on Sundays starting the first Sunday of November until further announcement. Navarro County Genealogical Society will present a free workshop on genealogy research from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Corsicana Public Library Civic Room, 100 N. 12th St. A brief NCGS meeting will be held from 9:30 to 10 a.m. Registration for the workshop will begin at 10 a.m. The public is invited to attend the morning session for beginner research (from 10:30 a.m. to noon), the afternoon session for advanced research (from 1 to 3 p.m.), or attend both sessions. Kerens 4-H, FFA and FCCLA will host a dinner and auction at the Kerens Alumni Center in downtown Kerens. The dinner will be homemade stew and chili for $7; and $3 for children under 10 years old. Dinner will begin at 6 p.m. with the auction to begin at 6:30 p.m. Proceeds from this event will benefit the Kerens Friends of Youth organization to help purchase animals and non-livestock projects at the Navarro County Youth Exposition in March. Kerens Friends of Youth also contribute to the students not making the premium auction at the expo.
