The Texas Ethics Commission re-elected Steven Wolens, formerly of Corsicana and a principal at law firm of McKool Smith June 28.
Wolens grew up in Corsicana, attending Bowie Elementary, Collins Junior High, and Corsicana High School.
His family founded the K. Wolens department stores.
Wolens was originally nominated to the Commission by Speaker of the House Joe Straus. The Commission is composed of eight commissioners, four Republicans and four Democrats, all appointed by the Governor, Lt. Governor, and Speaker of the House.
The Ethics Commission oversees compliance with laws concerning political contributions and expenditures, political advertising and personal financial disclosure of state elected officials and employees, judges, certain county and municipal officeholders, and candidates for those offices, as well as lobby registration reports and activities.
For 24 years, he served as a member of the Texas House of Representatives, authoring landmark legislation covering partnerships and limited liability corporations, ethics reforms, anti-trust laws and electric deregulation.
Texas Monthly magazine named him one of the “Ten Best Legislators” in Texas on six different occasions.
