Ziegenhagen wins champion registered heifer

Corsicana — Registered heifers are different from other animals at the Youth Expo.

Most kids who have been around the barns a year or two know better than to name their chickens, rabbits, goats and lambs, because those “projects” are going to be put up for auction, but the heifers can easily become pets with names and special halters. A winning heifer is going to be in the family, possibly for their whole lives.

That said, there are fewer registered heifers than many other animals because they are a long-term investment, and typically only kept by families that breed and keep cattle.

The Grand Champion winner of the registered heifer division, Megan Ziegenhagen, 14, of Rice FFA, knows the score on heifers. She doesn’t do steers or goats or other animals. She entered two heifers only in the Expo — Princess and Duchessa. Princess, who’s well into gestation and appeared Thursday like she might give birth to a Volkswagen at any moment, won Grand Champion and top European breed heifer. Megan is an eighth-grader at Rice Intermediate School.

Ziegenhagen, 14, said she spends a couple of hours a day, and has been showing heifers since she was seven when her parents first allowed her to enter “pee-wee” shows. She is the youngest daughter of Bill and Maria Ziegenhagen of Rice, and the sister of Zoe and Alex, who also cut their own paths through the Navarro County Youth Expo barns in years past.

“Whenever I saw my sister showing I wanted to, and I begged and begged and begged my parents,” Megan said Thursday. “My sister and brother are the reason I got into this.”

Reserve Champion was won by Jon or “Joe-Mac” Weil, of Frost FFA, who also took home third in junior showmanship, and first in junior European breed, and overall champion European breed heifer.

Senior Showmanship Grand Champoin was Noah Grounds, Blooming Grove/Barry 4-H; Reserve Champion, Garrett Berry, Kerens FFA; third, Sabrina Jameson, Frost 4-H.

Junior Showmanship Grand Champion was Madison Peterson, Blooming Grove/Barry 4-H; Reserve Champion, Megan Ziegenhagen, Rice FFA; and third, JohnWeil, Frost FFA.

Caleb Curl, 13, of Frost FFA, won grand champion of the commercial heifer show, the first leg of the commercial heifer overall prizes. Unlike a lot of the other animal categories, commercial heifers aren't show-things with smooth coats and stardust on their hooves. They're straight out of the pasture, a bit muddy and certainly not the lady-like, pampered creatures that will be led around the ring in the registered heifer show.

It’s the big musical, the one that makes me think of ‘cast of thousands,’ or in our case, dozens at least, and it’s here only for a few short days. ‘Annie Get Your Gun,’ is Irving Berlin’s candy box treasure of a play about Annie Oakley, the sharpshooter in love with a showman.
It’s presented by the Warehouse Living Arts Center but because of its size is on stage at the Palace Theatre. Shows will be at 7:30 p.m. tonight, Friday and Saturday, with a 2 p.m. Sunday matinee.
