5 Browns coming to Palace

Classical group to present a full concert to the public on February 7

Corsicana — The Navarro Council of the Arts and the Corsicana Palace Theatre are hosting the classical group, The 5 Browns. The talented Browns will be performing for fifth through 12th graders in Corsicana ISD and Navarro County schools at Corsicana High School on February 5 and 6, and then will present a full concert to the public on February 7 at the Palace Theatre.

The 5 Browns are delivering on their dream to wake up classical music by introducing it to the widest, largest and most excited audience they can find. Whether performing individually or together in various combinations from duo to complex five-piano arrangements, The 5 Browns reveal a deep connection to the intent of their material while bringing a fresh energy and dynamic character to the color and tonal spectrum of their sound.

The 5 Browns — Ryan, Melody, Gregory, Deondra and Desirae — all attended New York’s Juilliard School. In fact, they became the first family of five siblings ever accepted simultaneously. The quintet enjoyed their first wave of critical attention in February 2002 when People magazine dubbed them the “Fab Five,” and at about the same time they were featured on “Oprah” and “60 Minutes.” The 5 Browns have released three CDs that each went to #1 on Billboard Magazine’s Classical Album Chart.

The New York Post has proclaimed: “One family, five pianos and 50 fingers add up to the biggest classical music sensation in years…When these kids do Rachmaninoff, they’ll make you forget about Marshall amps.”

The quintet has garnered extensive coverage from media outlets ranging from “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” “Good Morning America,” “Today,” and The View to The Martha Stewart Show, Public Radio’s Performance Today, as well as The New York Times, Parade, People, the Los Angeles Times, theSunday London Telegraph and Entertainment Weekly. who called them “…five young Mormons who all play scorching piano. Thundering down on five Steinways together, they’re button-down cute and somewhat otherworldly.”

The 5 Browns tour extensively and have performed in numerous venues including the Grand National Theater in China, Suntory Hall in Japan and, in the United States, The Kimmel Center in Philadelphia, Symphony Hall in Chicago and Alice Tully Hall in New York City

In addition to touring, The 5 Browns are published writers. Their book, Life Between the Keys was published by Phoenix Books in March 2009.

In the spring of 2010, their new CD “The 5 Browns… In Hollywood,” was released on the E1 Music label. They are also featured in a new PBS TV special, “The 5 Browns In Concert” that is airing on PBS stations throughout the country.

“The Arts District has been anxiously awaiting this concert for a long time and is excited to bring this concert to the students and people of Navarro County,” said Leah Blackard, executive director of the Arts Council. “The students of Navarro County will have a chance to participate in their inspirational Arts Education program that will educate students on classical music along with education and determination. On Thursday, the public will have a chance to see the full two hour concert at the Palace which will include Mozart, music from “The Sound of Music,” music from “Star Wars,” and much more.”

Tickets for this one night concert are $20 to $35 and are available by calling the Palace Theatre box office at (903) 874-7792. This concert and educational component are brought to Corsicana by the generosity of the community along with the Annie Lee Robbins Charitable Trust, EM Sheppard Foundation, J. Tom Eady Charitable Trust, Rena Fleming Foundation for Youth, Pearl Thornell Trust, Guardian Industries, and Community National Bank and Trust.

Caleb Curl, 13, of Frost FFA, won grand champion of the commercial heifer show, the first leg of the commercial heifer overall prizes. Unlike a lot of the other animal categories, commercial heifers aren't show-things with smooth coats and stardust on their hooves. They're straight out of the pasture, a bit muddy and certainly not the lady-like, pampered creatures that will be led around the ring in the registered heifer show.

It’s presented by the Warehouse Living Arts Center but because of its size is on stage at the Palace Theatre. Shows will be at 7:30 p.m. tonight, Friday and Saturday, with a 2 p.m. Sunday matinee.
