An auction, classic car show, live music and a firefighter tribute are all part of plans for a benefit fundraiser for the family of Perry Calvin, set for Saturday in downtown Corsicana.
Calvin was killed in the tragic explosion at the West Fertilizer plant April 17 that killed over a dozen fellow firefighters, and injured more than 200 others, leveling parts of the town of West.
Saturday’s event is being held to raise funds for the benefit of Calvin’s family — his wife, two small children, and a third on the way.
The fundraiser, to be held along Third Avenue from Main to Beaton, and stretching south on Beaton to Fourth Avenue, is set to kick off at 4:30 p.m.
Scheduled to entertain during the evening are MeMaw’s Misfits, Caleb Grant, and the Southern Storm Band from Palestine.
Along with the musical entertainment, a classic car show put on by Cars of Navarro County will be held. Proceeds from the car show are also going to the Calvin family.
Other activies are being added to the event, including a petting zoo and a motorcycle show, which will also benefit the Calvin family.
Also taking part in the tribute and fundraiser are a number of area fire departments, expected to line several blocks with their fire trucks. A special tribute to the volunteer firefighters is also planned, said Vicki Prater, one of the event’s organizers.
There will be a live auction at 7 p.m. featuring a variety of items, and is expected to move “very fast” according to Prater. Cash, checks and credit cards will be accepted at the auction, set to take place in front of the NAPA Auto Parts Store at Third and Beaton.
Follow an awards presentation for the car show at 8:30 p.m., the Southern Storm Band will perform again inside the Remington.
Prater suggested those who plan to attend and participate Saturday bring a lawn chair and a willingness to help the Calvin family.
All funds raised Saturday will go to benefit the Calvin family.
