New leadership at First Baptist Church

Corsicana —  First Baptist Church in Corsicana began a new era on Sunday, when Pastor Danny Reeves took pulpit for the first time to begin leading his congregation.

Reeves, 38, joined the church from First Baptist Church of Edna, southwest of Houston.

He comes to Corsicana with wife Charissa, and children Courtney, Emily and Ryan. Reeves has been a full-time minister for over 20 years, and a full-time pastor for over 10 years.

The church had been without a pastor since the tragic death of Father Dr. David Edwards in a traffic accident in October 2009.

“God has led our hearts to Corsicana, and we are ready to lead this great church,” Reeves said.

“We’re excited to be here in town and we are looking forward to growing the church and being here as long as the Lord asks. We want to serve with the love that Jesus Christ has given to us.”

First Baptist Church’s Pastor Search Committee began the search for Edwards’ successor at the beginning of January last year.

The appointment of Reeves comes after he was singled out for the position last year and follows several visits made by Reeves to Corsicana during the fall.

“We did come several times throughout the fall. We deeply enjoyed what we saw. We felt there was tremendous potential not only for the church but also for the community. We look forward to joining our hearts and efforts to better the community,” Reeves said.

“We’re so happy to be here and so thankful for the welcome we’ve received from members of the community and the school administration has been great, and we look forward to great days ahead with the people of Navarro County.”

Reeves was quick to reflect on the past and also talked about the future for the church, the community and his family.

“I’m deeply appreciative of the memory and the ministry of Dr. Edwards and I am thankful for the hope and the healing that the spirit of God has provided to the congregation. I truly believe the church will go forward with a deep pride and thankfulness for its past and a deep hope and optimism for its future,” Reeves said.

Reeves is close to completing his Doctorate of Ministry at the George W. Truett Theological Seminary at Baylor University in Waco. He gained his undergraduate degree at Howard Payne University before completing his Masters of Divinity Degree, also at George W. Truett.

Dr. James Price, 76, who was a member of the Pastor Search Committee at the church that helped to bring Reeves to Corsicana, believes that First Baptist has the right man for the position.

“We started looking about the first of the year 2010. It has taken us about a year. We think we have the man that God intended us for this position,” Price said.

“We had strong evaluations and recommendations from people we really respected and we looked at many pastors and we just thought he would fit our position. We were impressed with him from the very beginning.

Caleb Curl, 13, of Frost FFA, won grand champion of the commercial heifer show, the first leg of the commercial heifer overall prizes. Unlike a lot of the other animal categories, commercial heifers aren't show-things with smooth coats and stardust on their hooves. They're straight out of the pasture, a bit muddy and certainly not the lady-like, pampered creatures that will be led around the ring in the registered heifer show.

It’s presented by the Warehouse Living Arts Center but because of its size is on stage at the Palace Theatre. Shows will be at 7:30 p.m. tonight, Friday and Saturday, with a 2 p.m. Sunday matinee.
