Corsicana — Coy Bostian likes baseball and school, and he got a diagnosis of leukemia about two weeks before Christmas. The Mildred fifth-grader turned 11 years old in February. He can expect about three years’ worth of cancer treatments.

A couple of bright spots this year are that he’s now allowed to play baseball, and there’s the promise of a trip to Disney World by the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

“I think a major part of it is that he gets to fly,” explained Genia Bostian, Coy’s mom. “He’s never flown before. He’s real excited about that.”

The trip will probably be in October, after his immune system is recovering and he won’t have to wear a mask everywhere. He may even have some hair again by that time, Genia said.

“We’re not quite on the countdown yet, but we’re getting there,” she said.

To help raise money for Coy’s trip to the Magic Kingdom, the local Make-A-Wish Foundation committee is hosting a celebrity wait event all day long Wednesday at La Pradera in Corsicana. Volunteers will serve up lunch and dinner with their tips going to the cause.

Among the wait staff that day will be District Attorney Lowell Thompson and County Commissioner Jason Grant, as well as some children and their families who have received wishes in the past, explained Heba Shafik, advisory board member for Make-A-Wish in Navarro County.

“Those are my favorite celebrities — the Wish kids and their families,” Shafik said. “I really love seeing the Wish kids leading people to their tables.”

Other celebrities scheduled to fetch and carry chips and salsa are Becky Burns, Mildred superintendent; Shannon Baker, Mildred principal; and students from Corsicana High school who are involved in Calicos and Honor Society.

“I like to see kids helping kids,” she said.

Coy, who’s doing slightly better now that he’s back in school, intends to be part of the fun on Wednesday, too, according to Genia.

“He’s excited. He wants to wait tables,” Genia said.
