Derrick Days kicks off with hot dog fest at Pocket Park

Corsicana — Despite chilly weather, the Derrick Days kickoff had all the elements of a successful first event Wednesday at the Pocket Park in downtown Corsicana.

The traditional luncheon is hot dogs and music, and those were in plentiful supply Wednesday, with music provided by the Byron Haynie band at lunch, and the Sloane McCain Band at the supper.

For Jennie Richardson and her daughter, Paulette Tipton, it’s the best part of Derrick Days’ week. They make the actual Derrick Days festival if they can, but they always make the hot dog luncheon.

“We do this every year,” Richardson said. “We’re into the kickoff. We always do the kickoff.”

The hot dog luncheon was provided by the C&C Trading Post, along with donations from Olé grocery, Frito-Lay, Dr Pepper, and Sunshine bakery. It was served by volunteers from the Lone Star Cowboy Church.

A new addition to the traditional Wednesday event was the addition of an evening version of the free meal from 5 to 7 p.m.

For Steve and Kathleen Armstrong all the Derrick Days events are worth seeing.

“It’s community. We like to support what the community’s doing,” Kathleen explained. “I think that’s what makes small town special — the fairs or festivals they put on.”
